Senior House Sharing is on the Rise

Aviv Older Adult Services of Jewish Family & Career Services is proud to offer one of our newest programs, HomeShare ATL! HomeShare ATL is an alternative housing solution connecting homeowners with a spare bedroom and bathroom in Cobb, Dekalb, Fulton, or Gwinnett county with adults seeking an affordable place to live.

We offer customized matching of approved applicants based on the individual requirements of both the homeowner and the seeker. The service entails introductions, coordination for a trial match with support and guidance, templates for a signed Living Together Agreement with lease, and staff follow up support throughout the year. One or both individuals referred for a match must be at least 60 years old. At HomeShare ATL, we work to find the most compatible match based on interests, needs, and lifestyle.

HomeShare ATL values individual safety, and performs a comprehensive background screening to participate. The only charge for participation is a one-time application fee of $35 to support the background screening. Rent amounts are determined and collected by the homeowner.

Our program is nonsectarian. Both participants must be fully vaccinated for Covid-19.

A home provider offers an affordable private bathroom, bed, and common space in exchange for rent and/or help around the house, companionship, and peace of mind.

Homesharing is a win-win that can change two lives from any generation.

It can be less expensive to live with other adults. You can share housing costs, utilities and often food. If you own a large home, you can afford to offset the cost of maintaining it by taking on a housemate. You get to age in place and your housemate gains a more affordable way to live.

There will be another adult to share chores and responsibilities and to provide a helping hand when needed.

It is more likely that someone will be around to help you if take a fall, to notice if you don’t come home or to call 9-1-1 when necessary. This can provide real peace of mind. There is a sense of security that comes with having a housemate- and not just when you hear a noise in the middle of the night.

You gain companionship and people to potentially share holidays and special occasions. Your circle can grow as you meet the friends and family that a housemate can bring to the equation. Only you can decide if this is desirable or not.

A sense of community is good for your mind, body, and spirit. We need people around us to offer advice or support, to laugh together, to break bread, to get us out of the house and push us to try new things. Living with other people is one way to create such a valuable support circle.

HomeShare ATL is unique in Georgia as a member of the National Shared Housing Resource Center, one of 50+ similar programs across America.
