Yiddish Culture Around the World with Julia Rothkoff

Information

Yiddish has thrived in many places around the world. We will begin by learning about Yiddish culture in North America and Israel before travelling around the world to more unlikely places where Yiddish culture has flourished, such as Mexico, Argentina, Australia, South Africa, and China. We will watch clips about a student who attended Yiddish day schools in Mexico and a writer who grew up speaking Yiddish at his home in Argentina. We will learn about Yiddish scholarship in China, opportunities for language immersion in North America, and the current state of Yiddish's international scope.

Julia Rothkoff is currently pursuing an MA in Jewish Studies from Columbia University and received her BA from Barnard College in Film Studies. She discovered her love for Yiddish accidentally, as a way to simply fulfill her college’s language requirement. However, the language now guides her academic work, and she is on the road to fluency. She is very passionate about spreading Yiddishkeit and learning the Yiddish language.
