JF&CS Welcomes Dr. Howard Schub and Dr. Suria to Horwitz-Zusman Child & Family Center

JF&CS is thrilled to announce new additions to the Horwitz-Zusman Child & Family Center.

Dr. Howard Schub, Consulting Physician

Dr. Schub is our new Consulting Physician and is a child neurologist who has practiced in Atlanta since the 1980s. His special interests and expertise are in developmental disabilities, child and adult ADHD, child learning and emotional disorders, and pediatric movement disorders (tics/Tourette Syndrome). He will be lending his expertise to JF&CS clinicians and will provide medical support for clinicians who have identified children with anxiety, depression, and other behavior disorders. While he will be focusing primarily on children, Dr. Schub will also see some adults, the majority of which will be parents of the children who are seen by therapists at JF&CS.

Dr. Schub grew up in suburban New York, and went to Cornell University to study psychology. Cornell was where he became interested in child development and working with children.

“I spent my summers at a child development center in Long Island, where I worked with those in the field,” Dr. Schub said. “In addition to working with those in the field, I researched, published a bit, and had great mentors at Cornell.”

From there, he applied to medical school. He received a Moorehead fellowship to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for medicine, and was one of only three in his class to receive the fellowship.

After college, he trained in pediatrics at the University of Rochester and child neurology at Emory University. He founded and led his own private practice, Child Neurology Associates, from 1984 to 2011. Child Neurology Associates was the second largest pediatric neurology group in the country during its lifetime.

From there, he did a lot of other great work in the Atlanta community. He led the Atlanta Southeast Center for Epilepsy and Neurodevelopment (ASCEND) from 2012 to 2020, and served as the Director of Medical Services at the Marcus Institute/Autism Center from 2001 to 2008. Dr. Schub was also Chief of Neurology and an active staff member at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for many years.

Why Dr. Schub Chose JF&CS

For Dr. Schub, JF&CS presented itself at exactly the right time.

Dr. Schub retired in January of 2021. Even during his retirement, though, Dr. Schub stayed relatively busy. He did consulting work for an Atlanta institute that helps children with developmental disabilities, wrote chapters on Tourette’s and tremors for the Child Neurology Foundation.

But even so, Dr. Schub was getting restless in his retirement, and wanted more a steadier gig. His former practice manager noticed that J&CS had been advertising for a part-time psychiatrist position for the Horwitz-Zusman Child & Family Center.

“I had a strong understanding of the community and a reputation in the Atlanta community which I felt I could bring to the role,” he explained. “And I liked the two day a week position that would allow me to continue work. It was the right place and the right time. And I think it will be a win-win for everyone.”

Dr. Schub is currently open to receiving new patients. To make an appointment, contact us at therapy@jfcsatl.org or 770.677.9474.

In addition to Dr. Schub, we'd like to welcome another fantastic addition to our team, and announce the retirement of another.

Dr. Sarah Suria is our new Psychologist. She earned bachelor's and master’s degrees in psychology from Columbia University and a doctoral degree in school psychology with honors from Fordham University. Dr. Suria was a postdoctoral fellow in a private practice performing neuropsychological evaluations in New York City, and also has experience working in public and private schools. Sarah enjoys working with families and helping students identify issues that impact all areas of functioning particularly when they apply to an academic setting.

We also would like to announce the retirement of our resident psychiatrist, Dr. Bernard Wolfberg. He received his medical degree from Chicago Medical School at Rosalind Franklin University Medical Center and interned at Evanston Hospital and Mt. Sinai Hospital. We would like to thank him for his many years of skill and expertise that he lent to the agency and its clients. He will be missed!
