Receiving a dementia diagnosis for yourself or a loved one can feel overwhelming, and at JF&CS we are here to help. We’re pleased to announce that Memory Support Coaching is now available at as part of our Aviv Older Adult Services. Joining offerings like Geriatric Care Management, supplemental tools and others, we are always evolving to support the physical, mental and emotional needs of our clients and those who care for them.
Memory Support Coaching is spearheaded by Samantha Freeman, Credentialed Professional Gerontologist and Certified Dementia Practitioner. The support is split into Cognitive Coaching for individuals with early- to mid-stage dementia, and Engagement Coaching for care partners. The services are customizable based on the needs of the client and their caregivers, and the personalized sessions take place in the comfort of home. Coaching can help enhance engagement and connection, slow cognitive decline, give guidance and support to the caregiver, and much more.
Cognitive Coaching:
For Individuals with Early- to Mid-Stage Dementia
The goal of cognitive coaching is to enhance quality of life and independence for individuals with early- to mid-stage dementia by maintaining and/or increasing cognition. A diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment does not mean dementia is inevitable, and improvement in cognitive ability can help maintain an individual’s functional independence – a key aspect to improving quality of life.
One-on-one coaching sessions include exercises for areas of cognition such as attention, memory, language, perception, and problem solving. Sessions are tailored to individual abilities and interests, and can center around topics such as music or art.
Engagement Coaching:
For Care Partners
The goal of engagement coaching is to enhance the partnerships between the individual with dementia and those who care for them. Creating a meaningful, effective relationship between a caregiver and a person living with dementia increases quality of life for both individuals and lowers stress levels for all parties.
Coaching is available to care partners living with and/or regularly interacting with individuals at all stages and forms of dementia, but is especially focused on mid- to late- and end-stages.
The recommendations and guidance provided by Engagement Coaching will help to maintain dignity, purpose, and meaning for all parties while helping to navigate evolving relationship dynamics. Care partners will receive guidance on how to maximize everyday life for themselves and those in their care, capitalizing on remaining skills while making care tasks more manageable and dignified.
