Raise Fun and Funds with Lemonade Stands

Running a lemonade stand in the summer is a childhood tradition that stands the test of time. Aside from it being just plain fun, lemonade stands teach kids multiple lessons in an approachable way: they offer a chance to get creative, work with others, raise money, create a sense of community, connect with neighbors and learn about business.

In the summer of 2019, a rising second grader named Leah decided to host her first lemonade stand along with a few friends. The kids knew they wanted to support a Jewish organization, and at her young age, Leah was already familiar with the work of JF&CS. Her great-grandmother had worked for the agency for 30 years, her mom gave her time volunteering, and Leah has volunteered in the Artist Collective. The group ultimately decided to raise money for the Emergency Assistance Fund at JF&CS.

“It always feels good to help others and do a mitzvah,” said Leah. “It’s a great way to get outside and have fun, and it’s even better when you can do it with friends and family."

Lauren Harris, Ph.D., Leadership & Engagement Officer, took notice of Leah’s ambition and saw a bigger opportunity, which led to this year’s Lemonade FUNraiser initiative. Anytime from now through September 10, families can host a lemonade stand to raise money for one of the following areas of service: Children’s Mental Health, Older Adults, Adults with Disabilities, Dental Hygiene, or Food Insecurity. Families can pick up a starter kit at JF&CS this summer from 9:30am-4pm that includes a packet of lemonade, informational booklet, sunglasses, and coloring pages for your poster.

Leah has hosted a stand every summer since, and has expanded her offerings into DIY tie-dye stations, unique hand-stamped stationery, and more. She has some astute advice for other kids as they get started:

  • Location matters! Choose an area with a good amount of foot traffic.
  • Check the weather. Pick a nice sunny day with a clear forecast.
  • Have a bank of change on-hand and if you can, offer Venmo or PayPal for people who do not carry cash.
  • Get creative! How can you zhush your lemonade stand to make it unique?
