Community Volunteers Serve Together

Close to 95 families (almost 400 people) gathered at The Weber School on January 18 for the 2nd Annual Family Mitzvah Day, a JF&CS Volunteer initiative that brings families together to serve, connect, and have fun! The event featured more than 50 high school student volunteers, and our generous community partners, all working side by side in the spirit of service.

In just its second year, Family Mitzvah Day “has already grown so much!” said event organizer Megan Koziel, LMSW, Volunteer Engagement Manager. “It’s a reminder of how impactful it is to create space for people to give back together.”

The enthusiasm in the room was palpable, as excited parents and kids got to choose their favorite Mitzvah projects. Some projects met tangible needs, some were full of heart, and all celebrated community. A pop-up coffee shop, treats and snacks rounded out the experience.

“This is SO MUCH FUN!” exclaimed one young attendee, a sentiment that was echoed many times throughout the day.

All in all, participants made:

200 soup jars

400 hygiene kits

100 senior care bags

7 art pieces

300 sensory kits

65 lap blankets

80+ birthday cake kits

100+ birthday cards

100 therapeutic comfort packs

100+ beaded bracelets

Families also donated and sorted books with PJ Library, sorted waste with Adamah ATL, learned about Dr. MLK Jr. with Repair the World, made hundreds of keychains for Israeli soldiers with the Schoenbaum Shinshinim, and created slime with the JF&CS Horwitz-Zusman Child & Family Center.

“It was meaningful to see families and volunteers finding joy and connection through service,” said Megan. “We’re incredibly grateful to the families, sponsors, and partners that made the day possible.”
