Gabrielle is a middle school girl who first came to therapy after her mother was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and was told she had less than a year to live. Gabrielle is the oldest of 5 children and often supports her father in taking care of her mother and her younger siblings. Gabrielle does not get much time to be a kid and feels she has to be strong for her family. In therapy, she is able to be a kid again – playing games with therapist, acting silly, and talking about the things she struggles with at home. Of course, therapy can never “fix” or “solve” any of the things Gabrielle is dealing with, but for one hour a week it gives her a space to feel seen and understood, a place where she does not always have to be so strong, and a place where she can just be.
